COURSE DESCRIPTION

Caterpillar is continually coming out with new electronic controls and monitoring systems. The object of the Machine Electronic Controls course is not to be too specific to a current system but to teach students the basic operation and troubleshooting of electronic systems in general, and the proper use of available literature, schematics and tooling to properly troubleshoot and calibrate machine systems.

PREREQUISITES

Completion of Service Information System (SIS)/Electronic Technician (ET). Completion of S4 Electrical Systems or alternatively must have a clear understanding of Ohm’s law and basic electrical principle would be essential to be successful in the class. Students must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, hard hats and fire retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course, the participant will be able to understand:

  • Proper use of Caterpillar electrical schematics.
  • Understand and practice basic electrical principles.
  • Properly use a digital multimeter.
  • Test and repair machine wiring.
  • Access and interpret ECM fault codes.
  • Locate & identify all electronic control input & output components.
  • Troubleshoot machine electronic controls.
  • Calibrate and adjust electronic components.

Successful completion of a written or online examination with a passing grade of 80%.
