COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers basic DC electrical concepts and applies these concepts to the electrical systems utilized on Caterpillar equipment. Shop time will be used to determine battery state of charge and ability to produce current, test starting and charging systems, and troubleshoot basic wiring circuits.

PREREQUISITES

Heavy Duty Technician Certification is required. Students must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, hard hats and fire retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course, the participant will be able to understand:

Apply Ohm’s Law to basic wiring circuits, using a multimeter to test shorts, opens, grounds and high resistance circuits.
Complete repair procedures for wiring pins, sockets, and connectors in Deutsch connectors.
Describe charging system operation and test the system for correct operation using a multimeter and ammeter.
Describe starting system operation and test the system for correct operation using a multimeter and ammeter.
Test a battery for charge condition and cranking ability.
Understand and trouble shoot Engine Management Systems.

Successful completion of a written or online examination with a passing grade of 80%.
