COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the Caterpillar Diesel Engine Systems and will give the Technician an understanding of how the various Caterpillar Intake, Exhaust, Fuel, Cooling and Lubrication Systems operate. The Technician will gain an understanding of the related components, and basic troubleshooting of the various systems.

PREREQUISITES

Heavy Duty Technician Certification is required. Students must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, hard hats and fire retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course, the participant will be able to understand:

Understand the five main Caterpillar Diesel Engine Fuel systems. (3400 New Scroll, MUI, MEUI,HEUI, CCR)
Perform cylinder performance testing and diagnostics using the Caterpillar ET program.
Test Diesel Fuel API.
Understand IVA Operation.
Pressure test the Air Intake System for leaks.
Understand the different Turbocharger designs used by Caterpillar.
Test and adjust a Wastegated Turbocharger.
Identify and understand the various exhaust systems used by Caterpillar.
Understand Caterpillar DEA and ELC Coolants and how to test them.
Perform basic cooling system testing and troubleshooting.
Understand the engine lubrication system.
Understand the different engine Oil Ratings and how to determine which oil must be used for a specific diesel engine.
Use Caterpillar ET.
