After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

• Explain the operating principles of Caterpillar® engines.
• Identify the effect of temperature and altitude on developed horsepower.
• Explain the high heat value (HHV) and low heat value (LHV) of fuels.
• Explain the effects of the fuel BTU content.
• Determine the proper gas pressure and set the main pressure regulators.
• Disassemble, assemble, and adjust a Main Pressure regulator and Impco carburetor.
• Check and properly adjust carburetor linkage.
• Understand how to balance banks of dual carburetor, Vee type engines.
• Determine the effect of turbochargers, aftercoolers and waste gates on engine performance.
• Demonstrate how to set the operating pressure of the adjustable waste gate.
• Install and time an Altronic III magneto.
• Troubleshoot the ignition systems.
• Explain the operation of the basic engine protection system.
• Determine the approximate horsepower of a Stoichiometric engine from the “absolute” manifold pressure.
• Connect and use an exhaust-free oxygen analyzer.
• Explain the effect of the Methane number of the engine timing and performance.
• Successfully complete a written exam with a passing grade of 80%.
